Virgin Voyages, I’m Sorry I Almost Became a Stowaway

Full disclosure: Virgin Voyages invited me aboard the Valiant Lady for a ship tour, and the experience created a lasting impression. From the moment I got onto the gangway, I knew this would be a memorable day. The staff acknowledged me with authentic smiles, and the ship’s energy was immediately contagious. I have to admit, Virgin Voyages really surprised me. After spending time exploring the Valiant Lady, I started wondering if getting off the ship was actually necessary. Between the food, the pool, the entertainment, and the ship’s overall vibe, it was surprisingly easy to settle in and not want to leave. Hence the title: Virgin Voyages, I’m Sorry I Almost Became a Stowaway.

When I first accepted Virgin Voyages’ invitation to tour the Valiant Lady, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought I knew the general cruise routine—a packed schedule, buffet lines, and plenty of group activities. But the moment I got aboard the Valiant Lady, it was clear this was a different kind of cruise experience. The welcome was warm but not overbearing, and the ship’s design immediately set the mood for a relaxed and modern atmosphere. Even in just a few hours, I could feel myself sliding into vacation mode.

One of the first things I noticed was how much attention had gone into the design and layout. The space felt open and airy, with plenty of natural light streaming through big windows and glass doors. The décor was modern but inviting—think chic lounges, vibrant art, and comfortable corners to unwind. While I strolled from deck to deck, I kept stopping to admire something new, whether it was a lively mural, a hidden nook, or a sweeping ocean view.

The Food Was a Highlight

There was no shortage of food onboard, and there was plenty to keep things interesting. One remarkable difference from traditional cruising was the Galley, Virgin Voyages’ fresh take on the typical buffet. Instead of the standard self-serve buffet lines, the Galley is set up like a modern food hall, with a variety of made-to-order stations offering everything from ramen and tacos to all-day breakfast and freshly pressed juices. You can walk right up to the counters and order, but here’s a clever twist: there are also friendly servers who will come to your table if you raise a little flag. It’s the best of both worlds—full DIY or full service, depending on your mood.

We were helped by Kim, who was just wonderful! She provided amazing service with an infectious smile, making sure we had everything we needed. It’s small moments such as these that make the experience feel special and genuinely welcoming. Your food is prepared on the spot—hot, fresh, and just the way you like it —and the whole approach feels more personal and hygienic, plus you’re not left wandering with a tray, hoping to take the last serving of your favorite dish. The vibe is relaxed and casual, but the quality is a definite step up from the usual cruise buffet fare.

From fresh options and breakfast to desserts that were definitely worth photographing, eating was very much part of the experience. For lunch, I went with a classic Caesar salad, and it was honestly delicious—fresh, crisp, perfectly dressed, and satisfying without being heavy. My friend tried the hamburger and fries, which looked absolutely incredible. I noticed right away that, unlike most places that tend to pile on an overwhelming amount of fries, Virgin Voyages served just the right portion—enough to enjoy without feeling like you’re wasting food. It’s a small detail, but it made the meal feel more thoughtful.

And then there was dessert. I couldn’t resist the s’mores cup, and it was, quite simply, next-level. Layers of chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and buttery graham cracker crumble combined in a way that made me consider writing the chef a thank-you note. This was nostalgia coupled with indulgence in one perfect cup—think childhood campfire memories with a serious culinary upgrade. If you’re a dessert person, put this at the top of your list. And yes, I took pictures of the desserts. Someone has to document life’s important moments.

What stood out wasn’t simply the quantity of food, but the quality and creativity behind each meal. Innovative dishes, vegan and vegetarian options, and even a handful of late-night snacks hit the spot after an evening of exploring the ship’s entertainment. I was impressed by the diversity of specialty restaurants, each with its individual atmosphere and menu. One moment I was sampling sushi in a sleek, minimalist space, and the next I was enjoying a multi-course tasting menu in a restaurant that rivaled some of my favorite spots on land. Whether you wanted a casual bite by the pool or a more upscale dinner, you could find something to fit your mood. The crew seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the dining experience, often recommending their personal favorites and relating stories about the ingredients or inspiration behind certain dishes.

I liked having plenty of choices without the dining experience feeling repetitive.

The Valiant Lady Has a Different Feel

What stood out to me most was that the Valiant Lady doesn’t feel like a traditional cruise ship. It has a younger, more modern feel, with interesting spaces, games, music, and plenty of places to hang out. One of my favorite surprises? Free karaoke booths. Yes, you read that right—Virgin Voyages offers three private karaoke booths on the Valiant Lady, and all you need to do is sign up once you get on board. There’s a booth for 2-4 people, one for 4-6, and another for 6-8, so whether your group is feeling shy or ready for a full-blown pop concert, there’s a space for you. The booths are soundproof, stylish, and perfect for belting out your favorite guilty-pleasure tunes without judgment (except maybe from your friends). The décor and layout encouraged guests to explore, with surprises—a pop-up performance, a hidden cocktail bar, or a eccentric art installation—around nearly every corner. I particularly loved stumbling into a live music session in the afternoon, and later, discovering an interactive art display that had people stopping to snap selfies. Even walking around the ship felt like part of the experience because there was always something different to see. If you’re looking for a cruise that feels a little different from the traditional cruise experience, Virgin Voyages definitely deserves a look.

The Pool Deck

Health and Wellness at Sea

Virgin Voyages proves you don’t have to abandon your health goals just because you’re on vacation. The Valiant Lady features a fully equipped fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, and best of all, unlimited group fitness classes are included at no extra charge—think yoga, indoor cycling, HIIT, and more. For those who prefer fresh air, there’s an outdoor running track that wraps around the ship, perfect for a sunrise jog or a sunset stroll with ocean views.

If you want to refuel healthily, the ship offers a dedicated health food eatery serving nutritious bowls, salads, and fresh options. There’s also a lively juice bar with smoothies and wellness shots to keep you energized between activities. Whether you’re a fitness fanatic or want to balance out all the indulgent dining, Virgin Voyages makes it easy to keep wellness in your vacation routine—no excuses (unless your excuse is another s’mores cup, which I fully understand).

‎ The Aquatic Club

The pool area quickly became one of those places where you can sit down “for a few minutes” and somehow lose track of time with the sun out, comfortable loungers around the pool. The pool itself was intentionally designed to never feel overcrowded, and the surrounding area offered both lively music and peaceful corners for those looking for a bit more tranquility. I spent time relaxing with a cold drink, people-watching, and soaking up the sun, all while a live DJ provided a perfect summer soundtrack. With that vacation feeling all around you, it’s easy to see why people don’t want to leave.

The Cabins: Your Own Floating Retreat

One of the true highlights of the Valiant Lady was getting to experience the cabins up close. Virgin Voyages has really thought of everything here—these rooms are not just beautiful, but smart. The design is sleek and modern, with intuitive lighting, smart storage, and one of the most tech-forward setups I’ve seen at sea. I loved being able to control the lights and curtains from a tablet, and the USB ports and charging stations everywhere made it easy to stay connected (or unplug, if you prefer your vacation tech-free).

But let’s talk about the actual showstopper: the iconic balcony hammocks. I sat in one for a quick break and promptly discovered I could have spent the entire afternoon there, moving gently through the ocean breeze. It was so comfortable that I actually considered whether I could get away with spending the night in it—napping, reading, or just watching the world go by. If ever there was a place to fully embrace your inner stowaway, this is it.

The rooms themselves were bright, airy, and calming—a far cry from the cramped cabins you might associate with older cruise ships. Soft colors, clever storage, and floor-to-ceiling windows created a sense of space that made it easy to unwind. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious, the lighting was perfect for getting ready or winding down, and the combination of comfort and state-of-the-art tech left me seriously impressed. Even on a short tour, it was clear these cabins are designed to make you want to stay just a little longer.

After a day spent exploring the ship, it was nice to have a comfortable cabin to come back to—but honestly, “nice” doesn’t quite do it justice. The room looked clean and modern. It gave me exactly what I needed after a busy day—somewhere comfortable to relax before heading back out, or, in my case, to begin plotting how I could stay just a little longer without anyone noticing. Soft colors, clever storage, and floor-to-ceiling windows created a sense of serenity and space that felt worlds away from everyday bustle. I found myself thinking, “Maybe no one would notice if I hid behind the curtains and just never left…”

appreciated the little touches: a spacious shower, excellent lighting, and tech-friendly features that made it easy to unwind or watch a show. It was the perfect escape after hours of activity or, let’s be honest, the perfect hideout for a wannabe stowaway. Even though the tour was short, I could easily imagine settling in for a longer stay, enjoying the view from my private balcony each evening, and perhaps becoming suspiciously difficult to remove from the premises. Virgin Voyages, you’ve been warned!

Who Would Enjoy Virgin Voyages?

If you like modern surroundings, good food, entertainment, social spaces, and a more relaxed approach to cruising, Virgin Voyages is definitely worth considering. It’s the kind of cruise where you can be as active or as laid-back as you want. The combination of high-energy events and low-key hideaways lets you tailor the trip to your pace, whether that means dancing the night away or only lounging on your balcony watching the sunset.

Would I Sail Virgin Voyages?

Without hesitation. The Valiant Lady feels fun, modern, and relaxed without feeling like every other cruise experience. Each day delivers something new—pop-up shows, hands-on workshops, and opportunities to meet like-minded travelers from around the world. I could see how, on a longer trip, you’d never run out of things to do or people to meet. The food was great, the ship had plenty to explore, and there was always another place to check out.

But before I could launch my master plan to become the Valiant Lady’s most charming stowaway, it was time to disembark. As I was leaving—just as a fresh group of sailors was coming aboard—Johnny, one of the cast members from the Happiness Crew, greeted me. Johnny radiated positive energy; you could tell within seconds that he truly loves what he does. I couldn’t help but ask him, “How do you keep up this level of energy for an entire cruise?” He grinned and answered with three words: “Lots of coffee.”

It was the perfect send-off. If there’s a secret ingredient to the Virgin Voyages experience, it might just be the people—especially crew like Johnny, whose enthusiasm is as catchy as it is genuine. As I finally stepped off the ship, I realized leaving wasn’t just hard because of the food, the entertainment, or the beautiful spaces—it was also because of the people who made it feel like you never want to say goodbye.

So yes, Virgin Voyages — I’m sorry I almost became a stowaway. Next time, I may bring a suitcase and stay a little longer.
